5 Summer Crafts to Keep You Busy

Cards, Gifts, & DIYs Jul 22, 2020

Summer is a time that is all about becoming one with nature. From spending time hiking, to tanning and swimming on the beach or relaxing pool side, and celebrating happy hour with a nice picnic, there is so much to enjoy about the sun, the sky, and the trees. But with all the excitement, we still need to find a way to relax and unwind, because the last few months have felt like a rollercoaster, and there is no better way to do that then with some arts and crafts.

These are all perfect for different types of days, whether it’s the lazy Sunday or Tuesday when there is nothing to do, or when you don’t want to do what needs to be done or for the days where you’re babysitting and need to keep the kids busy. All you need to do is sit down, relax, and spend the days focusing on relaxing and your craft.

#1 Gardening Boxes for your Kitchen

The summer is all about planting to make sure that your garden is top notch. From flowers, to plants, and maybe even some trees and bushes, it’s the best time to make the perfect box that shows off both your artistic and gardening side.

I’d recommend starting off by designing these for your kitchen and then making some for your outdoor garden. Simply order a large wooden box from Amazon along with some paints and brushes to design some incredible pictures or designs.

If you’re running out of ideas on what to design for your box, google some images of your favourite scenery or place and get painting. Another option, if you prefer some background noise, is to put on a Youtube tutorial of a step by step guide of how to paint whatever you like.

#2 Knitting

For when you need to unwind and relax, this is one of the best ways to do it. Order some needles and yarn from Amazon and watch a few tutorials on Youtube and make some beautiful apparel for the fall and winter.

It is true that knitting does have a bad rep for being an uncool hobby, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Making and designing your own apparel is becoming really trendy as far as quarantine hobbies go.

There are lots of great Youtube tutorials for knitters of all levels and you can find really cool things to make: hats, scarves, gloves, etc. All with instructions that will help you along your knitting journey.

#3 Paint Plant Pots

This is the perfect summer activity to showcase your artistic skills and your green thumb skills because it isn’t overly time consuming but still is fun. Order some cheap pots, paints, and brushes from Amazon and paint away while you listen to some of your favourite jams or tv shows in the background.

This is a really laidback activity to end of the week or start it, and it’s pretty minimalistic. Simply sit down at your newspaper covered desk and paint whatever your heart desires, whether it’s a famous painting or a time of day or scenery that you like.

If you’re looking for some inspo, The Spruce Crafts has some great ideas on how to design your DIY pot for your flowers or plants.

#4 Embroidering Canvases

While this seems scary and slightly challenging at first, I would definitely recommend trying it out because the paintings are beautiful and give out amazing results. This is also a fun activity because you can mix and match mediums where you can paint the canvas and then embroider figures on top or vice versa.

Embroidering canvases is all up to your imagination and really does allow you to focus on what you want to create and how you want to create it. Everything from the colour of the thread, to the backdrop and the image you choose, to outline are all up to you. This really is all about you and what you want to design. For this type of craft, I’d recommend watching a tutorial or tracing an image for the best results.

#5 Mini Diamond Paintings

When you’re looking for an activity that is all about detail, this is definitely the one for you. One diamond at a time is the best way to make sure that you aren’t missing a piece, and while this may seem overly time consuming, I can guarantee that it’s totally worth it.

There are also lots of beautiful options to choose from and it’s easy because you don’t have to come up with it on your own. Simply order one from Amazon that speaks to you and start painting your diamond picture. This is also a great activity because you can pause and come back to it when you need a break or just want a fun challenge for the afternoon, which makes it feel far less demanding.

I hope you enjoyed today’s article and that you guys are finding ways to stay busy during quarantine.

As always, stay healthy and safe.

Xoxo,

Maya
